Context:

Consulting, a 150-year industry is waiting for disruption with digital. The 5th generation of consulting is awaited with a much more democratized coming together of expertise in the form of organized freelancers and the best person for the job.

Consulting in India is very unorganized, especially a lot of retired people act as individual consultants to small and medium sectors. Compulsory retirement at 60 is a very India specific phenomenon, in developed world there is no concept of retirement. Lot of people in their 50-60’s have a lot of domain skills and knowledge they have learnt through the years and have limited avenue to use these later. They have another good 15-20 years of productivity left in them which can be tapped for enhancing our GDP while also preparing the next generation to come to that level of expertise rapidly with a nice process and plan. These industry skills are in high demand across industries, technology firms and startups, especially in the context of a digital and AI led world.There is no coming together of global experience and expertise in this model.

On the other end new graduates coming out of schools are not industry ready, it takes them a good while to learn the domain, technology, and the consulting transformation skills. Even the industry experienced have limited knowledge to the strategic decision models of their own function through their 30 years of professional career unless they have been exposed to working with some MBB or Big 4 on the way. The structured problem-solving skills, analytical problem solving, and creative designing skills are not available to all, there are the must skills in the next generations.

There is today no place where this demand and supply can meet at a marketplace with some project organization structure, competency model, global delivery model in a slightly formal way. Like different teams come together in a large transformation project to deliver a great outcome. There is a need for a collaborative platform where industries, consulting, technology, digital strategists, IOT, Big Data, AI , Tableau etc. skills to come together to solve global business problems in absolutely creative ways .  Quality management, curation, and standardization around best practices of consulting are needed for clients to believe in the strategic mission model

The marketplace can be a supplier to the consulting industry of top talent on need basis. The MBBs and the BIG 4’s are already dabbing in these ideas setting up digital shops, like PWC hire etc. Companies today are subcontracting or providing retirement extensions to their top staff. The reach for these companies and the retired staff to deliver great work with potentially expand exponentially in a market place .The digital and IT sector will always have a lot of need for these domain expertise in their transformation programs , but there will be a need to prepare these teams to think different and digital , need a premobilization and curation program to think similar .

The Gig economy is opening post Covid. Global resignation is happening, this can be a good enabler in the scenario. The India demographics and experienced skills can be better leveraged for the developing world and the change drivers – FinTech’s, Telecom, technology have leapfrogged here. The concepts can be taken to other parts of the world. On demand – Core Flex models are the next mantra, it is happening on program management and transformation offices already, consulting is ready for adoption. This will build a flexible knowledge model for the world, a win win for all.
